Every society has three main fields of societal life – individual, social and economic. So does the science and scientific life. Which of these fields prevails defines the job descriptions. In classical academic career we have a clear picture about importance and influence of each of these fields. Individual field (with freedom to follow your interests, to create and to learn) is the strongest. Second strong is the social field (describing where you fit in the scientific society (on which bodies you sit, how high hierarchically you are, do you participate in planning of the scientific society and in decision making). The least dominant aspect of scientific life is the economic one – you are not required to make a profit, patent, make spin-offs in order to be successful, neither are you expected to fully cover your own costs.

Now, we need to understand how does this graph look like for the roles in Research infrastructures. Once we decide which of the fields is how much important for the RI, we will know what the roles in RI and RI KPIs should be.
This is the end of Part 1. Part 2 coming soon.
